Grayson McCallC-CKU890016.88
McCall was very efficient and effective through the air in the season opener last week when he went 16-of-19 for 262 yards and a TD vs. The Citadel. Yes it was a cake match-up, but he should have no problem improving on those totals this week against another easy opponent in Kansas. A year ago vs. KU, he threw for three TDs and added two more on the ground. Vegas is telling us that Coastal will win easily as four-score favorites - and McCall will surely be a headliner of the offense. The price tag is obviously hefty, but there aren’t many top QBs to roster on this slate outside of McCall. Expect him to be popular in cash.
Hank BachmeierBSUUTEP720016.82
Although there’s some blowout risk for Boise State’s starters in this one, Bachmeier and the passing game could be in line for a big statistical day. The Broncos QB put up 263 passing yards and two TDs on 39 attempts last week in a shootout with UCF. Considering Bachmeier and Co. lost the game, they may be motivated to come out of the gate with some early passing scores in this one. We know he at least has Khalil Shakir at his disposal as the best WR on this slate - it’s just a matter of how much production we see from both before the team starts running the ball with a big lead. If you’re not going Grayson McCall, then Bachmeier is the top pay-up option on the slate.
Jason BeanKUC-C680019.92
If Vegas is correct (which it usually is), then Kansas will be trailing early and by a big margin to Coastal Carolina. If that's the case, expect Jason Bean to be busy as KU’s offense heads to the air more often than not. Bean won the starting QB job this summer after transferring from North Texas and he went 17-for-26 for 163 yards and two TDs with 54 rushing yards added in last week in the opener. We can expect him to be throwing a lot more in this matchup, though, and the added rushing yards could provide a decent floor - considering he ran for 346 yards and five TDs last year over eight games. Without many cheap QB options, Bean should be popular as a Super-Flex.
Jalen FowlerNCA&TDUKE570021.62
Fowler is the cheapest starting QB on the slate and will face a Duke defense that just gave up 324 passing yards and three pass TDs last week. Those facts alone put him in the conversation as a Super-Flex - especially if you want an inexpensive one to pair with McCall. The Duke defense was very shaky last year and it seems they haven’t fixed things after allowing 31 points and 478 total yards to Charlotte. We should expect NC A&T to be trailing for much of this game and Fowler could be throwing a ton here. He threw for 268 yards and two scores last week and added 29 rushing yards. That stat line would be very solid at this price tag in cash.

Luke Bonner -- Utah State ($7,300 DK) -- Cash

Gunnar Holmberg -- Duke ($7,000 DK) -- GPP

Gavin Hardison -- UTEP ($5,900 DK) -- GPP

Running Backs
PlayerTeamOpp.DK $DK FPPGFD $FD FPPG
Mataeo DurantDUKENCA&T690051.2
Mataeo Durant’s Week 1 performance might’ve flown under the radar, but it definitely sticks out among this slate’s top RBs. In the upset loss to Charlotte, the Duke workhorse racked up 255 rushing yards and three TDs on a whopping 29 carries and added two catches for 37 receiving yards. He’s clearly the focal point of the Blue Devils offense and should see a big workload on a weekly basis moving forward. In a split backfield last year, Durant had 817 rushing yards and eight TDs with a 6.8 ypc average - outperforming teammate Deon Jackson. With Jackson gone, it’s all Durant now and he should be busy in this matchup if Duke wants to avoid another upset.
Cyrus Habibi-LikioBSUUTEP57005.6
Boise starting RB George Holani was a late scratch last week with an undisclosed injury and will likely sit this one out as well considering it should be an easy win. In his place, Habibi-Likio got the first crack at carries but didn’t really do much with the opportunity. He tallied only 23 yards on 12 carries and added three catches for three yards. If Holani is out, expect Habibi-Likio and Andrew Van Buren to split the workload like they did last week - and both should get plenty of touches as the team leans on the run with a sizable lead throughout. The team knows what they have in Van Buren and may want to give Habibi-Likio more work in this one. The Oregon transfer does have 21 career touchdowns to his name and racked up 10 for the Ducks back in 2019.
Reese WhiteC-CKU470018.2
The Coastal backfield will split work between White and Jones this season, and both are way too cheap on this slate for the upside they bring. We’ll get to Jones in a second, but White is up first. The junior scored twice in the opener last week, though his work was limited to just seven carries for 62 yards. It remains to be seen how much better the KU defense is in 2021 compared to last season - but it’s worth noting it was 118th in rush defense a year ago, allowing 236 rushing yards per game. We should see the Coastal offense feed White/Jones on the ground with an early lead and both will have the opportunity to return value. White averaged 5.4 ypc and totaled six rushing scores last season in a back-up role. He might end up being lower-owned compared to his backfield mate based on the price, but he’s still solid in cash.
Shermari JonesC-CKU400025
We mentioned already how the Coastal backfield will continue to be split with Jones and Reese White sharing carries. It’ll be hard to say which one will be the better DFS play week-to-week - but both will have plenty of opportunities for fantasy points in a soft matchup vs. Kansas. Expect both Jones and White to get enough work with Coastal being big favorites and likely leaning on the run more with a lead. In the opener, Jones finished with a better stat line than his teammate as he racked up 100 rushing yards and two TDs on only nine carries. We could easily see a similar stat line this week - making him an obvious value on this slate. Jones should be popular in cash, especially since he’s cheaper than White.
Calvin Tyler Jr.UTSTUND350018.4
If things go as they did last week, then Tyler Jr. will be Utah State’s lead back again with Devonta’e Henry-Cole sitting out. This may be a case where we have to pay attention to pregame warmups and news to see if Henry-Cole is playing or not. If he’s out again, getting Tyler at a cheap price tag as a No. 1 RB is very attractive for all formats. In the opener, he rushed for 84 yards and a TD on 14 carries and added three receptions in the passing game. He gets a solid matchup vs. an FCS North Dakota defense and could be in line for 15+ touches, 100 or so yards and a TD or two. We’ll take that all day at his price point - especially on a short slate.

Also Consider:

Otis Weah -- North Dakota ($5,400 DK) -- GPP

Andrew Van Buren -- Boise State ($4,600 DK) -- Cash/GPP

Ronald Awatt -- UTEP ($3,700 DK) -- GPP

Wide Receivers
PlayerTeamOpp.DK $DK FPPGFD $FD FPPG
Jaivon HeilighC-CKU800028.3
Heiligh was Coastal’s best receiver last year when he racked up 998 yards on 65 catches with 10 receiving scores. In the season opener, he picked up right where he left off when he had 133 yards and a TD on six catches vs. The Citadel. He’s clearly a top target for QB Grayson McCall and has the potential for 100+ yards and multiple scores in any given game - especially against a weak Kansas defense. The price tag is obviously expensive, though, so people might avoid him in cash. Still, he owns one of the highest ceilings among receivers on this slate.
Khalil ShakirBSUUTEP750026.8
For those of us that rostered Shakir last Saturday, the stud wideout didn’t disappoint with his two TDs and 91 yards on five receptions. Boise State’s top playmaker should be in line for big performances on a weekly basis as the top overall weapon in the offense and a clear rapport with QB Hank Bachmeier. Over the last two seasons combined, Shakir has totaled 1,591 yards and 12 TDs and he looks poised for another big season in 2021. If deciding between the two, Shakir is better for cash than Heiligh - though both should come through. The only worry about Shakir and Boise is how much they are throwing as nearly four-touchdown favorites here.
Deven ThompkinsUTSTUND700024.8
With Jaylen Warren gone, Thompkins is now the clear-cut top playmaker in this Utah State offense and he should see a healthy amount of touches weekly. In the opener, he had eight receptions for 94 yards and a TD while even adding in one carry for 14 yards. In just four games last season, Thompkins totaled 20 catches for 214 yards and a score as his floor was pretty safe in terms of targets. This matchup vs. North Dakota is an easier one than Washington State was last week and we could see a big game from Utah State’s No. 1 offensive threat.
Jake BoboDUKENCA&T510015.8
Though Jalon Calhoun is priced higher, Bobo is the better play from the Duke receiving corps considering the value. Last week, Bobo paced the Blue Devils’ pass-catchers with his seven receptions for 88 yards as he was the top target for QB Gunnar Holmberg. Compare that to Calhoun’s four catches for 25 yards and this seems like a no-brainer if you’re choosing between the two. In 2020, Bobo actually led Duke in receiving yards and he wasn’t far behind Calhoun in receptions.

Isaiah LikelyC-CKU480011.4
Coastal’s second-best pass-catcher is way too cheap at sub-5k and it should lead to him being popular in cash for those looking for value exposure to this offense. The tight end finished with 601 yards and five TDs a year ago and was involved plenty in the season opener with five grabs for 64 yards. Outside of Jaivon Heiligh, he’s a top target for QB Grayson McCall and the two clearly have a good connection in the short-to-intermediate routes. If he’s providing a similar stat line as last week, we’ll take that all day at $4800 in cash.
Justin GarrettUTEPBSU400013.45
Although Jacob Cowing is higher-priced and more well-known, Justin Garrett might be the better play for the savings and similar stat line. We know that UTEP should be trailing in this matchup vs. Boise State as nearly four-touchdown underdogs - so the Miners’ passing attack should be busy playing catch-up. In the first two games this season, Garrett has had stat lines of 4 catches for 74 yards and five grabs for 45 yards while also finding the end zone last week. Those nine receptions for 119 yards isn’t far off from Cowing’s seven for 181 and two scores. Garrett isn’t as much of a big-play threat as his teammate, but he might provide a better cash floor on this slate as the bigger-bodied receiver of the two.
Trevor WilsonKUC-C300010
If we know one thing about Kansas, it’s that they’ll surely be trailing for most of this matchup vs. Coastal - forcing the offense to throw more often than not. Naturally, we should look at some Jayhawk pass-catchers for those cheap PPR points. Trevor Wilson sticks out like a sore thumb at min price on DK despite leading KU in receptions last week. He totaled five grabs for 50 yards in the opener and seems to have an early connection with QB Jason Bean. At Buffalo last year, Wilson totaled 16 catches for 319 yards and three scores in a very run-heavy offense. You could do a lot worse for a min price player than a guy like Wilson who can give you 10 PPR points or so.

Also Consider:

Jalon Calhoun -- Duke ($6,500 DK) -- GPP

Stefan Cobbs -- Boise State ($5,600 DK) -- GPP

Jacob Cowing -- UTEP ($5,200 DK) -- Cash/GPP

Lawrence Arnold -- Kansas ($4,400 DK) -- Cash/GPP

Ron Hunt -- NC A&T ($3,900 DK) -- GPP
