Patrick Cantlay

Congratulations to Patrick Cantlay on winning the 2021 Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup Title.  The man has won nearly $20 million dollars in the last month on the PGA Tour, not too shabby.  I feel like he was forgotten after a slow start to the season but ended up winning four times this season.  Jon Rahm played fantastic but just couldn’t overtake Cantlay. It was one heck of a 2020-2021 PGA Tour season and I can’t image the 2021-2022 season topping it.  But I sure hope it does.

Normally, this would begin what we call the “wrap around” portion of the PGA Tour schedule but now it is the official start of the 2021-2022 PGA Tour season.  This event was known as the Safeway Open over the last few seasons but it has been rebranded as the Fortinet Championship.  You would typically see a sub-par field for this event following the FedEx Cup Playoffs but we’ve got some heavy hitters like world number one Jon Rahm, Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama, Webb Simpson, and Will Zalatoris. I will admit after those four, the caliber of player does drop off dramatically but we’ll still have some fun.

The tournament is played at beautiful Silverado Country Club in Napa, California.  It is a relatively short course by PGA Tour standards at 7,203 yard and a par 72.  It is tree lined with tough bunker locations, big greens and a little bit of water as well.  Players must stay dry this week.

Stewart Cink is the defending champ, Brandon Steele has won this event twice and Cameron Champ won here two years ago.  All of these players are really good drivers of the golf ball.  The stats I’ll be targeting this weekend will be Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, Strokes Gained: Approach, Fairways Hit, and Bogey Avoidance.  While putting is always at a premium on the PGA Tour, this week will not be a challenge especially with these big greens.  These players will be pin hunting all weekend.  Cink won the event at 21 under par last season, I fully expect the winner to be around 20 under once again.
