We had another good week at the Memorial and it would have been great if not for the whole Jon Rahm situation. If you missed it (how could you), he was forced to withdraw after Saturday’s third round with a six shot lead because he tested positive for COVID-19.  That left the tournament with Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay tied for the lead heading into Sunday.  While Cantlay won in a playoff, I had Morikawa as my one and done which really helped propel me back into contention.  The Memorial rarely disappoints but the Rahm situation really put a damper on things.  We move on and get one week closer to the U.S. Open.  The PGA Tour heads to South Carolina once again for the Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Club.

This spot on the PGA Tour schedule is typically reserved for the RBC Canadian Open but it has been pushed back another year due to COVID-19.  That puts up back in South Carolina for the Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Club. I will be honest, there is not a ton of information on this course but I’ll do my best to break it down.

Dustin Johnson at the PGA Championship

Conagree is a par 71 that stretches out 7,655 yards, that’s massive.  There are two par 4s that are over 500 yards but also two that should be drivable for most of the field.  The par 5 fourth hole is 645 yards which is the second longest hole on the PGA Tour schedule.  While the course is long, it is incredibly flat with little to no rough.  Players will tee off onto fairways but there is no in between fairway and sand and there’s a lot of sand.  This isn’t trap sand, it’s just standing sand all around the course kind of like what we saw at Kiawah and the players will be allowed to ground their clubs.  You will want to as always target players will great iron play and approach game into these greens.  When these players miss these greens which will happen a lot, Strokes Gained: Around the Green will be vital which goes along with scrambling as well.

The weather will determine a lot this week because if this course gets soaked before the tournament which is what the forecast is calling for, you may want to target more bombers.  If it’s wet, the shorter hitters won’t get the roll out that they’ll need on some of these longer holes.

We’ve got a tournament before a major and you know what the means, weak field.  We’ve got a few big names like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sungjae Im.  You’ve got guys resting and a lot of players trying to qualify for next week’s U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.  We’ve got a few other “notables“ like Ian Poulter, Martin Laird, Doc Redman, Paddy Harrington, and Rafa Cabrera Bello.

I’ll tell you right now, I will not be blowing much of my bankroll on this event, for number of reasons.  You’ve got a new venue, no course history, weak field, and the week before the major with bigger prize pools.  Go ahead and get yourself a little skin in the game but then start prepping for next week because that’s what I’ll be doing.

ONE & DONE PICK OF THE WEEK: Dustin Johnson

Good luck everyone!
