I did not think that the Open Championship could live up to what we’d seen in the first three majors this season but I thought it did.  It was definitely not a typical week at the British Open with fantastic weather throughout the weekend but we saw these players firing at pins and putting on a show for the spectators.  Collin Morikawa just proved once again why he’s the best ball striker in the world and his putting was out of this world.  He is just 24-years-old and already has two major championships, just insane to think about.  He becomes only the second golfer to have a PGA and Open before the age of 25 and the other, Tiger Woods.  I saw a little bit of Tiger in his game this weekend, once he got the lead over Louis on Sunday, he never let go and didn’t let anyone catch him.  That’s what Tiger would do in his prime, once he took the lead, no one was catching him.  Collin will have to be listed in the favorites at every major going forward.

The PGA Tour heads to Blaine, Minnesota for the third edition of the 3M Open.  This course should not be new to these players anymore.  The course was upgraded to today’s tour standards by a former number one player in the world with 35 professional victories and a major win under his belt, Tom Lehman.  Despite his upgrades, these young stars still put on a show with the winner averaging 20 under par over the first two editions.  The field this very weak being after the Open Championship and the Olympics on the horizon.  We’ve got only Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Tony Finau and Patrick Reed as the headliners.  I fully expect another shootout in Minnesota this weekend.

TPC Twin Cities is a Par 71 that stretches out 7,431 yards.  The fairways are relatively narrow and the rough is pretty standard for a PGA Tour event but there are two things you’ve got to avoid to keep your scores low on this course; water and sand.  There are 27 water hazards and 72 sand traps around this course.  The course also features two drive-able par 4s which the bombers can take full advantage of this week.  Plenty of opportunities to go low.

We are looking for birdie makers this weekend.  We want guys who can go low and do it over four straight days.  Once again we’ve got a course that features seven Par 4s in the 440-500 range and you know I’ll be looking at players’ efficiency from that range once again.  I’ll also take a closer look at Par 4s birdie or better because of the importance of scoring on these Par 4s.  I’m also looking at Strokes Gained: Approach like I do every week because they can’t give yourself birdie opportunities without getting the ball in good positions upon approach.  Strokes Gained: Off the Tee isn’t something I use often but on a course where you need to score on Par 4s and only a couple Par 5s, it’s important to start the hole off right.
