Nashville week! The second year for the Ally 400 and the hype is just as high as it was last year. Perhaps it’s the new car, perhaps it’s the unpredictable racing that’s happening, or perhaps it’s the hot temps, as hot as the chicken, that have the anticipation high. Perhaps it’s the switch to NBC coverage for the rest of the 2022 NASCAR season. Whatever the reason, we’re coming back to racing after the lone off-week of the season.

Nashville Superspeedway is a 1.33-mile, flat-ish, concrete tri-oval layout that is reminiscent of a few others on the NASCAR schedule. NSS made it’s debut last year for the Cup series and the racing mimicked most of the other intermediates that had preceded it. This year, it seems as though most of the drivers believe it will fall in line with more of the shorter, flat tracks that we’ve seen already.

Nashville DFS Strategy

Last year at the 2021 Ally 400, we saw one driver run away and hide from the field with Larson leading over 200 laps in the 300 lap race. That likely isn’t the case this year. Why do I say that? Well at similar tracks to this one this year, we’ve yet to really see one car dominate a full race. We’ve yet to see a driver hold a lead convincingly as well. What tracks compare with Nashville? Phoenix, Richmond, Kansas, Darlington, Dover, and Gateway. They all have some similar feature and/or racing style to Nashville Superspeedway whether it be length, banking, surface, or size. In fact, if we look at last year Darlington, then Richmond, then Phoenix correlate the best to the finish positions for Nashville with Dover and Darlington being the best comps. For this week, we’ve heard drivers mention how narrow the racing groove appeared to be in practice and that passing might be hard. The last time we heard that it was Gateway, which bore out as true. Passing at similar tracks this year has been tough, though still possible, just not in chunks. Based on how loose cars were getting in practice, we can also assume there will be several cautions with chances to pass on restarts.

Please go listen to the Podcast and read the Track Breakdown for more strategy and data for drivers in the field as well.
