What a great week we had on the PGA Tour last week unless you bet Bubba Watson to win before the tournament or you like your sudden-death playoffs to feature birdies. Bubba looked like he literally forgot how to swing a golf club coming down the stretch, and while his swing could easily return this week, it is hard to imagine anyone who watched the back nine Sunday will back him this week.

The other player who may be the most difficult to figure out for the Rocket Mortgage Classic is Jason Day. Day’s back issues have been well-documented, and while he appeared to grimace multiple times during the week, he still managed to finish T10 in his first tournament since the PGA Championship. Like Bubba, Day could be a great play if you are brave enough, but I have had too many lineups burned when Day withdrew Wednesday morning to go back to that well.

This is the third time the Rocket Mortgage Classic has been held at Detroit Golf Club. There will likely be a temptation to favor players who have made the cut in both years here and while I have plenty of those players in my Playbook, I would try to resist that urge. This was the fourth tournament the PGA Tour held after the pandemic break, and it was held without fans. For several players, this was their first tournament post-quarantine, and many of those took a few tournaments to really get going. I tried to be more forgiving of players who missed the cut last year and instead focused on players who come into Detroit with good form as well as players who are doing well in Birdies or Better, Par 4 Efficiency from 350 to 400 yards and putting inside 10 feet.

MY ONE & DONE PICK FOR THE WEEK IS JOAQUIN NIEMANN

Good Luck!
