The PGA Tour continues its Florida swing in Tampa Bay this week, but much of the focus leading up to the Valspar Championship will understandably be on last week’s PLAYERS Championship. Four days of weather delays caused the entire fourth round and parts of the third round to be played on Monday. Even when the weather did allow play, wind and rain affected plenty of scores, especially in the first three rounds. The biggest question we will face this week for DFS is how we evaluate the players who participated last week.

There are of course exceptions, but in general, I am much more likely to play someone who missed the cut last week than I would be otherwise. There are two reasons for this. First of all, getting extra time off is likely an advantage compared to players who played late into the day Monday. Secondly, it is much easier to write off a missed cut as due to the luck of the draw rather than an indictment of how a player performed that week. I won’t necessarily seek out players who missed the cut, but it could be a tiebreaker if I need to decide between two similar players.

Along those same lines, I am more wary of using players who finished on the leaderboard at The PLAYERS than I usually am. This especially applies to older players. Viktor Hovland will probably be just fine with the quick turnaround, but there is likely a reason 44-year old Paul Casey withdrew from the Valspar despite a great record at this event.

As for the course itself, the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort is a 7340-yard par 71. Length is not a requirement as it is on so many courses on Tour. Instead, past leaderboards are littered with players who hit it straight, avoid mistakes and are capable of getting hot on and around the greens. Despite the unusual finish to The PLAYERS, this could be a good week to play cash games because I expect several of the more steady cash-game players to rise to the top.

When I put the playbook together, I was surprised to see how many players I liked from the $7000 to $8000 range on DraftKings. I did not go into the tournament expecting to lean so heavily on that price range, but I think it could work out well this week. While the bottom half of the field could be mistaken for a glorified Korn Ferry Tour event, the top is quite strong. While I limited myself to just a few studs for the Playbook, I would certainly be okay with using the cheap plays on the playbook to play as many expensive players as possible.
