The 32-yer-old journeyman joins the team after hitting .244/.285/.420 with 15 homers for Milwaukee’s Triple-A club. Alfaro will share time with Riley Adams behind the plate for now, but he could lose his spot if Keibert Ruiz is able to return from his concussion.

Alfaro just became a free agent after playing in 82 games for the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate and batting .244/.285/.420 with 15 homers in 326 plate appearances. He figures to take the spot of C.J. Stubbs, unless the Nationals want to go with three catchers.

Alfaro didn’t appear in the big leagues last year and has officially achieved journeyman status after spending time with four different clubs during the previous three seasons. The 31-year-old is a one-dimensional slugging backstop at this stage of his career and never quite lived up to the astronomical hype as one of the most highly-regarded catching prospects of the last decade. He’ll bolster Milwaukee’s catching depth heading into spring training behind William Contreras, Eric Haase and top prospect Jeferson Quero.

Alfaro augments Chicago’s catching depth behind veteran Yan Gomes and former prospect Miguel Amaya heading into spring training as he’ll compete in the Cactus League for a spot on the Cubs’ season-opening roster. The 30-year-old one-dimensional slugging backstop never quite lived up to the hype as one of the most highly-regarded catching prospects of the last decade, but he’s a viable emergency option at this stage of his career. He got into 18 games this past season between the Red Sox and Rockies at the big league level.
