After a clean first inning, Freeland surrendered a two-run homer to Andrew McCutchen to start the second. Jared Triolo added two more runs on Freeland with a homer in the third. A triple and a double would make it five runs for the Pirates in the fifth. Freeland’s day would be done after five innings with six strikeouts. The 32-year-old left-hander will take a 5.31 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and a 91/34 K/BB ratio across 125 1/3 innings into a start against the Cubs in Colorado on Friday.

Colorado’s pitching staff was unable to solve the Blue Jays during any of the three games in this series and Freeland became the latest buzzsaw victim in this one. He served up seven hits, including a three-run homer to Bo Bichette, which accounted for most of the damage. He struck out four and issued two walks. He’ll aim for better results on Tuesday in a road outing against the Cardinals.
