Gilbert was shelled for six runs against the Royals on Wednesday while recording just one out, so the 31-year-old will head back to Charlotte with Cam Booser recalled in a corresponding transaction.

With Adrian Houser heading to the Paternity List, Gilbert will come up to start Thursday’s game in his place. Gilbert has thrown 5 2/3 innings in five appearances out of the bullpen for Charlotte with a 6.35 ERA.

Gilbert was just activated from the injured list on Friday and spun a pair of scoreless innings against the Rangers on Friday evening. The White Sox had to clear a spot on their active roster for Aaron Civale on Saturday and since Gilbert was unlikely to be available out of the bullpen he was the odd man out. Expect him to get another opportunity with the big league club in relatively short order.

The 31-year-old southpaw had been sidelined since the middle of May after suffering a sprained MCL in his left knee. He’ll give manager Will Venable another option from the left side in the bullpen. Owen White was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move on Friday.
