Kyle Manzardo is on the bench for Tuesday’s game against the Reds.
Manzardo sits for the sixth time in the last eight games with lefty Andrew Abbott toeing the rubber for Cincinnati on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. It’ll once again be veteran Carlos Santana at the cold corner with David Fry occupying the DH spot.
Lane Thomas is not in the lineup for Tuesday’s showdown against the Reds.
Thomas takes a seat after going 1-for-5 with a stolen base on Monday in his return from the injured list after missing two weeks with plantar fasciitis. It’ll be a red-hot Nolan Jones taking over in center field on Tuesday evening.
Aaron Nola is going to be shut down for two weeks after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in right rib.
Nola will have to build back up after he resumes throwing, so he’s probably going to be out until after the All-Star break. Mick Abel will continue filling in for him for now, and while we’re not all that optimistic he’ll remain nearly this successful, those wanting to take a chance on him now have a good excuse to do so.
The Orioles are planning to use Coby Mayo primarily at first going forward.
With Jordan Westburg back and Ramón UrÃas still available, there’s very little need for Mayo at third base right now. There still should be ample opportunity for him first and DH, but he’s going to have to step up and claim it; he’s been on the bench the last two times the Orioles have faced righties.
Mark Vientos said he’s already back hitting and jogging one week after being placed on the IL with a hamstring strain.
The strain looked bad when it happened, but it turned out to be quite a bit milder than expected, and it’s starting to sound like Vientos might be back next week. Meanwhile, Ronny Mauricio is getting more of Vientos’s at-bats and is hoping to prove indispensable by the time Vientos is ready to return.
Masataka Yoshida, on the IL since the start of the season as he recovers from shoulder surgery, said he has extended his throwing out to 105 feet and that he could begin a rehab assignment in late June or early July.
Yoshida’s bat is fine, as he showed this spring, but he hasn’t been able to play the outfield because of the shoulder. He’ll probably rejoin the Red Sox in the second half, but unless Rafael Devers reverses course and becomes a first baseman, there probably won’t much for Yoshida to do.
