Mariners recalled OF Dominic Canzone from Triple-A Tacoma.
Canzone returns to the majors with Seattle moving on from Leody Taveras ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Diamondbacks. The 27-year-old outfielder appeared in two games earlier this season and has been extremely productive at Triple-A Tacoma, slashing .296/.360/.564 with 13 homers and three steals across 45 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
Mariners designated OF Leody Taveras for assignment.
The Taveras experiment is over for the Mariners after just 28 games where he batted .174/.198/.272 with two homers and three steals. The 26-year-old center fielder remains a solid defender, but he simply hasn’t produced enough at the dish in recent years to deserve an everyday role at the highest level. He’s young enough that there’s probably another organization out there willing to roll the dice, but he’s unlikely to make much of an impact for fantasy purposes no matter where he winds up.
Will Brennan underwent surgery on Monday to repair the UCL in his left elbow.
Recovery timelines for position players are much shorter than pitchers when it comes to UCL surgeries, but it’ll be challenging for Brennan to make it back to Cleveland’s outfield mix before the end of the season. The 27-year-old hit the shelf back in late May with left forearm inflammation and ultimately wound up requiring surgery.
Andrew Walters underwent right shoulder surgery on Monday to repair his lat muscle.
No word on how long Walters will be sidelined, but it’s going to be a challenge for him to make it back this season. The 24-year-old rookie was transferred to the 60-day injured list last week after hitting the shelf back in late May with a lat strain.
Drake Baldwin is at catcher and batting second on Monday against the Brewers.
Baldwin’s strong start to his rookie campaign has resulted in a roughly 50-50 split of Atlanta’s catching duties along with veteran Sean Murphy over the past few weeks. The positive for fantasy managers is that the 24-year-old backstop has consistently occupied the second spot in the lineup behind top-of-the-order igniter Ronald Acuña Jr. He’s cooled off a bit after a sizzling-hot stretch a couple weeks ago, but he’s remained a viable mixed-league option for fantasy purposes.
Kyle Manzardo is not in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Reds.
Manzardo has started only two of the last seven games for Cleveland. The 24-year-old first baseman has been ice-cold at the plate in recent weeks, hitting .186 (19-for-102) with three homers and one steal over his last 30 games. The numbers have been even scarier over his last seven games as he’s just 3-for-20 during that span. It’ll be Carlos Santana at the cold corner and David Fry at DH on Monday night against Reds veteran lefty Wade Miley.
