The seven-year veteran, who turns 30 next month, is coming off a strong year. In 2024, Cooke earned his first Pro Bowl selection after setting a career high in net punting average (44.8), which ranked second most in the NFL. Cooke also pinned 34 of his 68 punts (50 percent) inside the 20, which tied for fourth most in the NFL. Cooke has spent his entire career with the Jaguars, who drafted him the seventh round in 2018.

This was always the expectation, but now it’s official. Smith-Shawver might be able to return down the stretch next season, but his rehab would have to go swimmingly.

Will Wilson was demoted. The Guardians are bringing Thomas back from his quick two-week absence due to plantar fasciitis without first sending him on a rehab assignment. His last stay on the roster saw him go 0-for-14 over four games. Before that, he spent a month on the IL with a wrist injury. He’s hit just .186/.242/.325 in 70 games overall since the Guardians acquired him the Nationals last summer, and while the team might give him another chance to play regularly in center field, he’s probably only going to prove useful against lefties.

Wilson had started five of the Guardians’ last six games, so this is something of a surprise. Still, he was hitting just .176/.263/.235 over 59 plate appearances. Wilson’s departure, combined with Lane Thomas’s return, suggests that Angel Martínez, who has mostly played center of late, will start seeing more middle infield time.

He’ll join the bullpen. Garza was just picked up from the Giants after posting a 6.11 ERA in 17 2/3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento this season. The 31-year-old has a 5.74 ERA major league ERA from his 21 appearances with the Guardians in 2021 and 17 appearances with the Red Sox in 2023.

Waddell has made four relief appearances during three stints with the Mets and has a 3.38 ERA and a 7/2 K/BB in 10 2/3 innings this season.
