The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this weekend in New York City.  It’s a fun final three weeks of the PGA Tour season.  You’ve got the Top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings competing this weekend at THE NORTHERN TRUST.  This will be the last event with a cut of the season as well. The Top 70 players in the standings after this weekend will compete next week at the BMW Championship.  There will be a lot of jockeying for a spot inside that Top 70.  Names like Bubba Watson, Harold Varner III, Ian Poulter, Adam Scott, Doug Ghim, and Alex Noren are just outside the BMW field right now.  Roger Sloan was 131st heading into the Wyndham and that playoff loss moved him to 92nd.  He’s not only in this weekend field, he’s got a shot at putting himself into next week’s as well.  Anything could happen!

Patrick Reed at the 2019 THE NORTHERN TRUST

THE NORTHERN TRUST will be played at Liberty National for the fourth time and first time since Patrick Reed won it in 2019.  The course is in Jersey City, New Jersey but you’ll see a beautiful view of the New York City skyline.  The course stretches out to 7,410 yards and plays as a par 71. Keeping the ball on the fairway is always a good thing as there is deep rough and beyond that, fescue. We’ve also got 98 bunkers and 10 water hazards spread throughout the course.  Water comes into play on about half the holes.  While that’s challenging in itself, I’ll be focusing most of my attention on around the greens and putting because of these small putting surfaces.  Trying to land on these greens will put extra pressure on the short game when these golfers inevitably miss.  These players will have bent grass blanketing the tightest lies and the greens, which could exceed 12 feet on the Stimpmeter.

The players are going to deal with weather issues throughout the weekend.  Scattered thunderstorms all over the forecast from Thursday through Saturday.  Sunday looks to be the only decent day.  Wind won’t be much of a factor.

The playbooks will slowly shrink as we move into the playoffs over the next few weeks. The Tour Championship will just be core plays that week because of the small field that will participate.
