Astros designated RHP Forrest Whitley for assignment.
It’s likely the closing paragraph on a long-winding saga that saw Whitley rise to consensus top pitching prospect before battling injuries for years and eventually settling in as a middle reliever at the highest level. The 27-year-old right-hander will be viewed as a disappointment for fantasy purposes considering the lofty expectations his minor league ascent generated. There’s still time for him to write a sequel in another organization, if there’s a club out there willing to give him a shot as a reclamation project.
Colt Keith is at DH and batting sixth on Sunday against the Cubs.
Keith has ostensibly split time with Kerry Carpenter at DH since center fielder Parker Meadows returned from the injured list earlier this week. The 23-year-old is expected to see action at the hot corner in the near future as Detroit tries to find creative ways to keep his bat in the lineup without moving Spencer Torkelson off the cold corner.
Guardians recalled OF Johnathan RodrÃguez from Triple-A Columbus.
RodrÃguez was up briefly earlier this season when he got into four games for Cleveland. He returns to the big leagues to take Jhonkensy Noel’s spot on the bench after posting a .902 OPS with seven homers over 46 games this season at the Triple-A level.
Guardians optioned OF Jhonkensy Noel to Triple-A Columbus.
Noel has been relegated bench role this season and has struggled mightily when given opportunities, hitting .146/.168/.223 with two homers and nine RBI in 107 plate appearances over 46 games. The 23-year-old slugger will attempt to re-discover his form while playing everyday at the Triple-A level. He’s a non-factor for fantasy purposes at the moment, but does boast significant power upside, if he ever fully puts it together.
AgustÃn RamÃrez is not in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Rays.
RamÃrez gets a rare break after making 18 consecutive starts between catcher and DH over the last three weeks since May 18. The 23-year-old highly-touted backstop went 0-for-5 during Saturday’s extra-inning affair, but is still hitting .245 with eight homers, 19 RBI and one steal through 39 games in his rookie campaign.
Kyle Stowers (hand) remains out of the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Rays.
Stowers will miss his fourth straight contest as he continues to deal with a lingering hand issue. It’ll be rookie Javier Sanoja getting a chance in left field on Sunday afternoon in his place.
