Happy Mother’s Day and we may finally have a dry day of baseball ahead of us! After two days of postponements (make sure to check in with our MLB Weather page) we are ready for a good size MLB DFS slate as DraftKings and FanDuel both bring us a seven-game main slate starting at 1:35 pm EST (Yahoo is only offering a 4:05p slate at this time). PITCHING

 

Jordan Lyles (BAL) $4.9K DK

Are we really going to go there? One thing is you have to give the guy credit because Jordan Lyles is a battler and a baseball lifer consistently pitching for also-rans. We all know the Lyles stories and how he is a gas can, but he is facing a mediocre Royals offense that is in the bottom third of MLB rankings in slugging % (.319); ISO (.104); and wOBA (.274). Take that and the fact that he is coming off a win against the Red Sox where he only gave up one earned run while striking out six in six innings and you have yourself a real tournament value play at $4.9K on DK. 

 

Zack Greinke (KCR) $6.4K DK/$6.0K FD

Zack Greinke has a career-low 6.5% strikeout rate through five starts but opponents still are not finding a way to have much success against him. The extreme pitch-to-contact hurler has recorded a 2.57 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP – one of only 18 pitchers with an ERA less than 3.00 and WHIP less than 1.00 in at least 25-innings this season. He has also only walked three batters, hit two batters, and allowed only two home runs. Greinke will never win you a GPP but when he pitches against free-swinging bats like the Orioles (24.9%) he will usually at least give you a high enough floor to keep you cashing.

HITTING

 

Edward Olivares (KCR) $2.6K DK/$2.6K FD

Edward Olivares should be leading off today against right-handed Lyles. He has gone 7-for-14 with three doubles, one RBI, and a run scored over his last four games to add to his season slash of .364/.417/.485 after 36 plate appearances. This is a kid with five-category production in the minor leagues and has been a decent reverse splits hitter in MLB with a .197 ISO/.345wOBA and 38% hard contact since 2021.

 

Mike Moustakas (CIN) $3K DK/$2.5K FD

Mike Moustakas may not be the offensive weapon that he was from 2017 to 2019 but that is mainly because of three years of suffering from injuries. He finally seems 100% and is batting cleanup in the Reds order while hitting .330 with a .440 wOBA and .417 OBP  over the last week. He gets the platoon advantage over Pirates right-hander Zach Thompson today in a hitter-friendly park- Great American Ball Park. Thompson is sporting an xFIP of 4.98 and isn’t missing many bats with a sub-20% K rate. 

 

Tyler Stephenson (CIN) $3.8K DK/2.8K FD

Tyler Stephenson has been raking after returning from the 7-day IL last week (concussion). He is coming off a 3-for-4 day yesterday with two doubles, four RBIs, and a run and is hitting .380 with a .429 OBP and .496wOBA over the last week. Over his last 20 games, he is hitting .311 with a .213 ISO/.387wOBA and today faces a mediocre at best Zach Thompson (9.39 ERA/2,22 WHIP) in the hitter-friendly confines of Great American Ball Park. 

 

Austin Hays (BAL) $2.9K DK/$2.9K FD

Some people may shy away from the cheap Austin Hays today due to his RvR matchup against Zach Greinke at home in Baltimore. Greinke, though, is a reverse splits pitcher that has been hit hard by right-handed bats- .223 ISO/.345wOBA with 43% hard contact compared to a low .114 ISO/.241weOBA to the left side. Hays is batting .329 over the last 20 games with a 138 wRC+ and is coming off a game against the Twins where he hit his third home run of the season. At this sub $3K salary Hays is viable in all formats today.
