Kyle Higashioka has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and is officially day-to-day.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that they’re going to give Higashioka a chance to avoid the injured list, but he’s not going to be available for at least a couple days. It’ll be rookie Cody Freeman pressed into emergency duty, if necessary. The positive news here is that it’s a relatively mild strain.

Ha-Seong Kim (back) remains out of the lineup for the second consecutive game on Wednesday against the White Sox.

Kim will sit out his second straight contest after exiting Monday’s series opener with lower back tightness. The 29-year-old middle infielder has dealt with three separate physical issues since making his season debut back on July 3. He’s managed to avoid a return to the injured list so far. There’s a chance he’s ready for Friday’s series opener in Cincinnati. It’ll be Taylor Walls filling in at shortstop once again on Wednesday evening.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Wednesday that Tony Gonsolin (elbow) has yet to resume a throwing program.

Roberts acknowledged that time is running out for Gonsolin to return this season, saying, “We’re going to have to make a decision with Tony soon. I’m not sure what that is, but we’re going to have to make a decision at some point.” The 31-year-old righty landed on the injured list in early June with elbow discomfort. While there’s no UCL damage requiring surgery, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that he’ll pitch again in 2025.

Ben Casparius is hoping to avoid the injured list after an MRI on his right calf didn’t reveal any structural damage.

Casparius was lifted from Tuesday’s relief outing against the Twins at Dodger Stadium with a right calf cramp. It’s unclear whether he’ll ultimately require a trip to the injured list, but that’ll likely come down to whether he’s able to resume throwing at some point later this week. There should be a definitive update on his status soon, but he doesn’t appear to be a facing a lengthy absence.

Vinnie Pasquantino had two homers and a double for a four-RBI day in the Royals’ 8-4 takedown of the Cubs.

Salvador Perez and Tyler Tolbert also left the yard at Wrigley today. It’s Pasquantino’s third career two-homer game. Like his previous two, this one came on the road. Just five of his 17 homers this season have come in Kansas City. He’s typically hit for a higher average at home, but that hasn’t been the case this season.

Seth Lugo yielded two runs in six innings and struck out six Wednesday in a win over the Cubs.

Lugo was coming off a rare weak outing against the Marlins, but this makes eight of nine in which he’s given up two runs or fewer. He’s 4-0 during the stretch, making him 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA overall. He’s due to face the Braves next week, assuming that he’s not traded before then.
