Harrison, who made the official announcement on his personal X account, hangs up his cleats after a 13-year career that spanned 1,208 games since 2011 and included stints with the Pirates, Nationals, White Sox, Athletics, Phillies and Tigers. The 37-year-old was a two-time All-Star Game selection. He was in camp last year with the Reds, but didn’t make the club’s season-opening roster, and didn’t play professionally last season.

After being informed he wouldn’t be on the Reds’ Opening Day roster, Harrison decided he would rather test the waters in free agency than go to Cincinnati’s minor league system. The veteran was always a longshot to break the Reds’ crowded infield depth chart, and he hit just 5-for-20 this spring with two doubles and one steal. There’s a chance another team will value his defensive versatility and give him a shot.

The non-roster deal will allow Harrison to come to spring training and compete for a spot in the Reds organization. As a Cincinnati native, it seems Harrison is hopeful to finish his career with his hometown team. The soon-to-be 37-year-old hit just 6-for-27 (.222) with a homer over six games with the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate in 2023. If he does make the team, it figures to be as organizational depth due to his positional versatility.
