Justin Turner played the role of hero for the Cubs on Tuesday night, smacking a walk-off two-run double off of Jesús Tinoco in the home half of the ninth inning.

The Cubs entered the ninth inning trailing 4-2, but they got to work as Carson Kelly reached on an error, Dansby Swanson walked and Nico Hoerner smacked a one-out RBI single. That’s when Turner did his damage, sending the home faithful at Wrigley Field into a frenzy. The 40-year-old infielder finished the night 1-for-1 plus a walk and is now hitting .169/.292/.186 with zero homers, nine RBI and one stolen base in his first 72 plate appearances on the season.

Justin Turner is at third base and batting sixth on Saturday against the Dodgers.

It’s an opportunity for Turner to make an appearance at the hot corner, potentially for the final time in his career, at Dodger Stadium. The 40-year-old has been mostly limited to first base this season in his Cubs debut, hitting .222 (4-for-18) with three RBI in eight games. It’ll be rookie Matt Shaw taking a seat on Saturday night.

Cubs signed INF Justin Turner to a one-year, $6 million contract.

The deal was reported on Tuesday and is now official. Turner will likely start at first base or DH against left-handed hitters but could also be used occasionally to spare Matt Shaw since the top prospect is set to play his first full MLB season which can often be a grind for young players. That role will be great for the Cubs but should keep Turner off most fantasy radars unless there’s an injury. Alexander Canario was designated for assignment to make room for Turner.

The Cubs are close to signing Justin Turner, reports The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney.

Turner should be a role player in Chicago, serving as an occasional first baseman against left-handers and as a DH if an outfielder goes down. He could also be viewed as a fallback at third base, but at age 40, he seems like a weak option at his old spot.
