2025 Player Outlook
Gray threw his four-seamer at the lowest rate of his career in 2024 and upped the usage on his cutter (.287 BAA, 30.8% whiff rate). When you combine those numbers with career highs in O-Swing% (31.3%) and SwStr% (13.4%), it’s not as surprising to hear that Gray had the sixth-highest strikeout rate in 2024 amongst starting pitchers with at least 130 IP! His 3.84 ERA is not in line with his 3.12 FIP or 2.82 xFIP, and it’s reasonable to believe that his ERA will be closer to the low-to-mid 3s in 2025. At the same point, I expect a slight regression in his strikeout rate, and this St. Louis offense isn’t as potent as it has been in years past. Gray is still an above-average fantasy starter who should provide fantasy managers with plenty of innings and solid ratios, making him an ideal SP3/SP4.
Player News
Sonny Gray was roughed up for six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings by the Brewers on Thursday.
Gray has been awesome for the most part, but his four bad outings have seen him give up five, six (four earned), seven and six runs, giving him a middling 3.84 ERA. The loss tonight leaves him 7-2 on the year. He figures to fare much better against the White Sox next week.
Sonny Gray scattered eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in the Cardinals’ 5-0 shutout of the Dodgers on Friday.
He struck out five. The eight hits amounted to just 10 total bases, and Gray didn’t give the Dodgers any free runners with walks or HBPs. It’s the fifth time this season that Gray has gone without allowing a run over at least six innings. Tarik Skubal is the only other pitcher who can say the same. Gray will take a 7-1 record and a 3.35 ERA into his next start, which could come either Wednesday against the Jays or Thursday versus the Brewers.
Sonny Gray tossed seven scoreless innings with ten strikeouts in a win over the Rangers on Saturday.
Gray was outstanding on Saturday, shutting down the Rangers over seven scoreless frames. He scattered four hits and walked one batter while collecting ten strikeouts on 19 whiffs. The 35-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 3.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 76/14 K/BB ratio across 69 innings. Gray will take on the Dodgers in St. Louis on Friday.
Sonny Gray allowed three runs over six innings and struck out five Sunday versus the Diamondbacks.
Gray allowed nine hits, but only the two doubles were for extra bases, and he walked none. It’s his sixth quality start, but since he left a tie game today, it didn’t result in a win. He’s 5-1 with a 4.06 ERA, and he’s set to pitch in Texas next time out.
