2025 Player Outlook
Darvish experienced a decline in strikeout rate for a fourth consecutive season, but he still continues to get solid results. He was able to post a 3.31 ERA, but an uncharacteristically low .245 BABIP may have helped him achieve those results. Durability is also becoming a concern as he enters his age-38 season. Darvish made just 16 starts last season after making 24 starts in 2023.

There haven’t been a ton of updates concerning Darvish’s potential return timeline lately. The 38-year-old reportedly touched 90 mph in his latest throwing session and is slated for another bullpen session later this week. At this point, his return to San Diego’s rotation doesn’t appear imminent.

Darvish had a setback two weeks ago as he was working his way back from elbow inflammation. He threw just “six or seven” pitches in a bullpen yesterday with his velocity sitting in the mid-80s. His next bullpen session will ramp up with more pitches at a higher intensity, but he seems like he’s still a ways away.

There hasn’t been anything definitive from the Padres regarding Darvish’s outlook. The former fantasy ace, who is working his way back from elbow inflammation, appeared to be on the precipice of making his season debut last week before that plan was abruptly scrapped. It’s a positive sign that he’s continued to throw, but it’s unclear how close he is to making it back to San Diego’s rotation. There’s no reason to stash him in most fantasy leagues.
