Wade Miley surrendered three runs over five innings Monday against the Guardians to pick up a win in his return to the Reds rotation.
Miley was making his first big-league start since Tommy John surgery last year. with the Brewers The 38-year-old previously pitched for the Reds in 2020 and ’21, with the latter being the best season if his 15-year career. Miley succeeded tonight in spite of the four walks he issued. He also hit a batter. It’s entirely possible he’ll prove to be a useful stopgap for the Reds, but there’s really no chance of fantasy value here. He’ll likely make his next start Sunday against the Tigers.

The Reds were already down 5-1 in the eighth, so the runs didn’t matter much. Miley, coming back from Tommy John, was signed and added to the Reds roster before the game because of Hunter Greene’s injury. He’s expected to join the rotation and face the Guardians next week.

The Reds signed Wade Miley to a major league contract. He had been with Cincinnati up until two days ago, pitching to a 8.84 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings with Triple-A Louisville. Miley had opted out of his minor league deal in the hopes of finding a starting rotation spot elsewhere. With Hunter Greene (groin) landing on the IL, Miley will now have a spot in the Reds rotation.

The Reds have cut Miley loose to pursue an opportunity somewhere else since they didn’t have a spot for him in the big-league rotation. The 38-year-old left-hander had a June 1 opt-out in his minor league deal with the club. He’s been working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and could wind up latching on somewhere as emergency starting pitching depth.
