2025 Player Outlook
Wacha had his best season as a professional since his 2015 campaign as a member of the Cardinals. He compiled a 13-8 record with a 3.35 ERA (3.65 FIP), 21.2 K%, and 1.19 WHIP across 166.2 IP for the Royals in 2024, earning himself a nice little payday this offseason. His 3.78 ERA on the road couldn't touch his 2.89 ERA at home, and he turned it on in the second half, posting a 2.79 ERA over his final 77.1 IP in 2024. His .290 BABIP was his highest in the past three seasons, and as a pitch-to-contact guy, it's hard to envision his strikeout rate getting much higher than where it has been the last few seasons. At this point of his career, Wacha is what he is, but he can be serviceable for fantasy managers as a back-end rotation arm (think SP6/SP7).
Player News
Michael Wacha struggled in Friday night’s loss to the Athletics, giving up five runs on nine hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.
The 33-year-old right-hander also issued a pair of walks on the night while striking out five. He served up a pair of solo home runs in the contest — one to Austin Wynns in the second inning and another to Luis Urias in the fourth. Wacha entrusted two runners to his bullpen when he exited in the sixth inning, and both ultimately came around to score. He got 11 whiffs on 93 pitches on the night — seven on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll bring a respectable 3.38 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and a 60/21 K/BB ratio (80 innings) into Thursday’s matchup against the Rangers in Arlington.
Michael Wacha surrendered three runs over six innings Saturday in a loss to the White Sox.
Wacha, now 3-5 in spite of a 3.01 ERA, has a lot to complain about as far as run support this season, but in this case, you kind of deserve a loss when you give up three runs to the White Sox. Tim Elko and Chase Meidroth, who had four major league homers between the coming into the day, both took Wacha deep. Wacha’s next start will come at home against the A’s.
Michael Wacha shut the Tigers out over seven innings with six strikeouts in a no-decision on Saturday.
Wacha went toe-to-toe with Tarik Skubal spinning seven shutout frames against Detroit. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning until Colt Keith knocked a base hit. The 33-year-old right-hander tossed 68-of-99 pitches for strikes and induced 11 whiffs to strike out six batters. He’ll take a 2.88 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 50/18 K/BB ratio across 68 2/3 innings into a start against the White Sox in Chicago on Friday.
Michael Wacha yielded four runs in five-plus innings Saturday in a no-decision versus the Twins.
Wacha pitched four scoreless innings before a three-run fifth that included a Harrison Bader homer. Having thrown just 59 pitches, he was allowed to begin the sixth afterwards, but he immediately gave up a homer to Kody Clemens and was pulled. Wacha ended up allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out one. He’ll pitch against the Tigers next time out.
