Royals signed RHP John Gant to a minor league contract.
Gant heads to Triple-A Omaha as extra organizational relief depth following a stint with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. The 32-year-old righty last appeared in the majors back in 2021 when he made 39 appearances (21 starts) between the Twins and Cardinals. He basically hasn’t pitched anywhere in the last four years besides an extremely brief stint with the Nippon-Ham Fighters over in Japan.
John Gant has signed with the Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball, according to a report from Japan.
Gant worked around serious control issues to register a 3.42 ERA over his first 76 1/3 innings this past season with the Cardinals, but the wheels fell off following a July 30 deadline trade to the Twins. The 29-year-old right-hander will presumably get a chance to operate as a starter in NPB. He likely would have been stuck with a non-guaranteed minor league contract had he opted to wait through MLB's lockout.
John Gant has elected to become a free agent.
Gant will test the open market after clearing waivers. The 29-year-old was acquired from the Cardinals in the J.A. Happ trade this summer and put up a rough 5.61 ERA in seven starts and seven relief appearances with the club.
Twins placed RHP John Gant on the 10-day injured list.
There has been no injury designation given at this time, but the right-hander was recently activated from the injured list with abdominal discomfort so this may be related. Gant surrendered six runs over four innings on Friday night and was unlikely going to make another appearance this season. More details should be available soon.
