José Berríos shut out the Cardinals for 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision Monday.
Berríos left with a 3-0 lead that went to 4-0 before the bullpen wiped it out by giving up four runs in the bottom of the eighth. It’s pretty remarkable that he has recorded just two wins while giving the Jays nine quality starts and a 3.38 ERA over 82 2/3 innings this season. He’s pitching a little better than he did last season, when he finished 16-11 with a 3.60 ERA in 32 starts. If he matches up with Paul Skenes at any point, the score might go into the negatives. Next up, though, is a matchup with the Phillies and probably Zack Wheeler on Sunday.
José Berríos yielded one run in six innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Phillies.
The lone run came on a Nick Castellanos homer. Berríos has turned in four straight quality starts, a stretch that’s dropped his ERA from 4.33 to 3.67. His peripherals are still somewhat worse than his ERA, but they’ve gotten better, too. We still wouldn’t recommend him in shallow leagues, but he definitely seems like a better play now than a month ago. He’ll get the Cardinals next time.
José Berríos racked up nine strikeouts over six innings of shutout baseball in an impressive victory over the Athletics on Thursday evening.
The 31-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits on the night while walking a pair. The Jays’ offense staked him to an eight-run advantage after the second inning and all Berríos had to do was keep the train on the tracks to earn a victory in this one. His only jam came in the sixth inning where the first two batters reached, but they never advanced from there as Berríos bore down to retire the next three hitters in order. He got 11 whiffs on 90 pitches on the evening, registering a CSW of 32 percent. He’ll try to replicate this outstanding effort when he brings a 3.86 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 65/28 K/BB ratio (70 innings) into Wednesday’s tilt against the Phillies.
José Berríos pitched six innings and allowed three runs Saturday in a loss to the Rays.
Berríos hasn’t been dominant at any point, but this is his sixth quality start to go along with a pair of other nice outings in which he didn’t quite complete six innings. He should have at least four or five wins. Instead, due to a lack of offense and the bullpen blowing leads for him on three occasions, he’s 1-2 with a 4.22 ERA. He’ll face the A’s next.
