2025 Player Outlook

Cortes bounced back after a rough, and injury affected, 2023 campaign to post a 3.77 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 174.1 IP for the Yankees. Cortes was dealt to Milwaukee in the Devin Williams trade, and Cortes figures to be a back-end starter and potential swingman (if needed) for the Brewers in 2025. Cortes posted a 1.58 ERA over his final six starts of the season, capping his 2024 regular season on a high note. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Milwaukee continue to increase his changeup usage to help against RHH, as they roughed him up a bit last season. Cortes should give Milwaukee innings from the back-end of the rotation, and he’s only a couple seasons removed from posting a 2.44 ERA across 28 starts. At his current ADP, he’ll give you innings and some good ratios, but there is some reliever risk with Cortes, especially if the team wants to look at some of its younger talent in the rotation.

Nestor Cortes (elbow) has resumed playing catch.

The 30-year-old had a PRP injection in his left elbow after his start on April 3rd and has been shut down since then. He started playing catch earlier this week and will build up to long toss, bullpens, and then a rehab assignment. We’re still many weeks away from seeing him on a mound in Milwaukee.

Cortes is facing a lengthy absence after hitting the injured list last week with a flexor strain in his left elbow. The 30-year-old southpaw will be shut down for a couple weeks before he’s cleared to resume a throwing program.

Nestor Cortes limited the Reds to one hit in six innings in the Brewers’ 1-0 victory on Thursday.

It’s the Reds’ third straight 1-0 defeat, with the first two coming at the hands of the Rangers. Cortes rebounded from serving up five homers his first time out, though he did yield two shots in Milwaukee tonight that would have been homers in Cincinnati. He wound up striking out six and walking two. He’s due to make his lone start next week in Colorado, so he won’t be a very good play then.
