Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters late Friday that Brad Keller will start a bullpen game on Saturday against the Mets.
The widely-held expectation is that Cubs top prospect Cade Horton is going to take the ball at some point during Saturday’s bullpen game, but Counsell refused to confirm it to reporters following Friday’s loss to the Mets.
Cubs selected the contract of RHP Brad Keller from Triple-A Iowa.
Keller will be in Chicago’s season-opening bullpen after making the club as a non-roster invitee.
Cubs announced that Brad Keller has made the opening day bullpen
Keller has had a strong spring, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 13/2 K/BB ratio in 11 2/3 innings. He figures to serve as a multi-inning option out of the Cubs bullpen to start the year.
Multiple outlets report that the Cubs signed RHP Brad Keller to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Keller has bounced around organizations, but spent last year with Boston and was an up-and-down arm for the Red Sox for most of 2024. He’ll compete for a bullpen spot with Chicago, but more than likely opens the season in Triple-A Iowa without a fantasy-relevant role.
