Hicks doesn’t appear to be facing a lengthy absence after landing on the shelf last week with right toe inflammation. It’s possible he’ll be ready to rejoin San Francisco’s bullpen mix without a rehab assignment.

Hicks was moved to San Francisco’s bullpen back in mid-May and has looked sharp in four relief outings since the transition. The hard-throwing 28-year-old righty should return before the end of June.

Hicks has posted a 6.55 ERA in his starts this year, and he struggled while going just two innings and allowing five runs in his start against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. There’s a chance Hicks could rejoin the San Francisco rotation at some point, but fantasy managers shouldn’t bet on it. Hayden Birdsong will start Tuesday against the Royals.

There’s a chance this will end Hicks’ time in the rotation, at least for now. His ERA is all of the way up to 6.55, and it seems pretty obvious that Kyle Harrison can do better than that with the way he’s throwing now. Hayden Birdsong could, too, but the Giants might be less inclined to stretch him out, even if he did get up to 65 pitches in relief of Hicks today.
