Bieber has already consulted with team doctors and will now meet with Dr. Keith Meister who performed his Tommy John surgery to determine the next steps. It’s obviously a very discouraging development as Bieber looked sharp with five strikeouts over 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his first rehab start on Saturday. Hopefully it’s nothing major and he’ll be able to resume throwing in relatively short order. Stay tuned.

Bieber struck out five over 2 1/3 scoreless innings on Saturday in his rehab debut in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League. He’ll face some higher-level minor league competition over the next few weeks before making his season debut, likely in late June or early July.

Bieber is recovering from last year’s Tommy John surgery and has been throwing live batting practice and simulated games in Arizona. By all accounts, his velocity looks good and he’s able to throw all of his pitches, but the team is being cautious not to push his recovery too quickly. He will likely only need one or two starts in the complex league before moving up to Triple-A for a few more starts. He could return to the Guardians’ rotation by early July.
