2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: After a 2.54 ERA in 2022, things very much went in the wrong direction last year with a 4.56 ERA (4.48 xERA). The big difference for Javier is that he struck out three batters less per nine innings while walking over three batters per nine innings and allowing 1.39 home runs per nine. With a 25.6% ground ball rate, Javier really needs to avoid contact as opposing hitters had a 23.8-degree average launch angle against him last year.

2024 Outlook: It is too soon to give up on Javier after an uneven 2023. He did recover somewhat with a 4.11 ERA in September, but there is more work to be done after he lost a mile per hour in fastball velocity. Keep an eye on how the right-hander looks in the spring as there is still a fair amount of talent in play.
