2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: The Portrait of Josiah Gray, to rephrase the famous novel, was a confounding one in 2023. The young righty made the most starts and threw the most innings of his young career (30 and 158.1 respectively). However, even though his ERA and HR/9 dropped from 2022, his K-rate, BB-rate, WHIP, and BAA all got worse. Gray’s splits weren’t fun either with big differences between home and away ERA (5.49 to 2.94) and first half to second half performance (3.41 to 4.76 ERA) in half as many innings.

2024 Outlook: So, what to make of that for 2024? For Gray it remains a growing process as he continues to eat up more innings and find the pitch mix that works for him. Based on 2023 pitch mix and pitch values, the curveball and split finger should be scratched to go back to adding a changeup in the mix. Draft Gray expecting him to give up more runs than he should and be surprised when he doesn’t.
