Jesús Luzardo bounced back in a big way Wednesday, striking out 10 while pitching six innings of one-run ball in a victory over the Cubs.

The run never should have happened. Carson Kelly would have fouled out to right, but Nick Castellanos botched the routine play, overrunning the ball. Since Castellanos didn’t touch it, no error was called, and Kelly went on to double and later come around to score. Luzardo gave up 20 runs in his previous two starts, taking his ERA from 2.15 to 4.46, but he didn’t seem to be having any stuff issues in the process. He got 16 missed swings today and threw 70 of his 99 pitches for strikes while going without a walk. He’ll face his former team next week in Miami.

Jesús Luzardo was lit up for a second straight outing Thursday, surrendering eight runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays.

Luzardo was on the short list of the game’s best pitches over the first two months. Now, he’s given up 20 runs in two starts, taking his ERA from 2.15 all of the way up to 4.46. Luzardo just couldn’t stop the bleeding in the second and third today. His velocity was fine, and only five of the 15 balls in play against him were hard-hit. We’re not worried about him at this point, though we wouldn’t blame anyone for sitting him down for his home start against the Cubs next week.

Jesus Luzardo allowed 12 runs with four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Brewers on Saturday.

It was an outing to forget for Luzardo. He got into trouble early, allowing a run in on a walk and two hits before Rhys Hoskins took him deep for a three-run homer to make it a 4-0 game before recording an out. He seemed to settle down for two scoreless frames before the Brewers brought eight more runs in to score in the fourth, including a three-run blast by Hoskins. Luzardo’s day would be done with one out in the frame. He struck out four. The 27-year-old left-hander will look to bounce back when he takes a 3.58 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and an 81/22 K/BB ratio across 70 1/3 innings into a start against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Jesús Luzardo was terrific in a tough-luck no-decision against the Athletics on Sunday, racking up 10 strikeouts across seven innings of three-run baseball.

The 27-year-old southpaw allowed nine hits and one walk on the afternoon. All of the damage done against him came in the opening inning as Jacob Wilson smacked a leadoff homer and Logan Davidson added a two-run double. Luzardo then took over and kept the Athletics off the board over his final six frames, affording his club the opportunity to come back. Luzardo exited with a 4-3 lead and in line for his sixth victory, but the Phillies’ bullpen was unable to hang on for him. He generated 18 swings and misses on 105 pitches on the afternoon — nine on his sweeper — while posting an elite CSW of 36 percent. He’ll tote an impressive 2.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 77/19 K/BB ratio (67 innings) into Saturday’s battle against the Brewers.
