2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Rutschman improved upon his impressive rookie season, leading all catchers in plate appearances, and with the Orioles DHing him on days he doesn’t catch, he’ll likely do it again. Orioles Park at Camden Yards has become somewhat of a pitcher’s park, but Rutschman was a much better hitter at home (.310 BA, .899 OPS) than on the road (.248, .728) last season. His average exit velocity increased slightly compared to his rookie season, but his average barrel rate suggests that his home run power might max out in the mid-20 range.

2024 Outlook: Breaking balls continued to give Rutschman trouble but his tremendous plate discipline (13.4 BB%, 14.7 K%) should help him maintain a batting average in the .270 to .280 range. He’s the number one fantasy baseball catcher and will likely be so for years to come.
