2025 Player Outlook

Greene is primarily a fastball/slider guy, but he did introduce a splitter and curveball last season, albeit used sparingly. I’d like to see him use his splitter more in 2024, as the results last season were solid (.243 BAA, .282 wOBA, 28.4 Whiff%) and it will continue to help him against LHH. His impressive 2024 campaign was basically ended early by elbow soreness, as he pitched just 7 IP (2 GS) after that, but his 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 27.7 percent strikeout rate were highlights from a breakout campaign. There’s some cause for concern coming off a career-high workload and having arm/shoulder issues in two of the last three seasons, as well as the question of just how much better can he get for fantasy purposes? The price point in drafts remains affordable, and he’s in line for double-digit wins this season, while continuing to be elite in the strikeout department. However, expect his ERA to be closer to 3.50 than last year’s 2.75 mark.

Hunter Greene has traveled to Los Angeles for a second opinion on his groin and back issues.

This seems like cause for concern. It’is definitely going to be a longer IL stay for Greene this time than when he missed two turns last month for the original groin injury.

Reds placed RHP Hunter Greene on the 15-day IL with a strained groin.

Greene was removed from his start on Tuesday night after feeling a strain in his groin. This will now be the second time he’s landed on the injured list with the same injury, so we should expect the Reds to be a little more cautious with their ace this time around. There’s not yet a set timeline for Greene‘s absence, but it would not be a surprise if we didn’t see him back on the mound for the Reds until July.

Hunter Greene was removed from Tuesday’s start against the Brewers with groin discomfort.

Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Greene was lifted after just 85 pitches in his third start back from the injured list after experiencing a similar groin issue. Not ideal. The flame-throwing 25-year-old righty struck out seven and allowed two runs over five innings. He’ll presumably undergo further evaluation and testing to determine the severity of the issue. It’s unclear whether he’ll make his next start on Monday against the Guardians at this juncture.

Hunter Greene allowed seven hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts over five innings in a loss to the Royals on Wednesday.

The juxtaposition of Greene and the soft-tossing Noah Cameron in this game was stark. While both pitched well, Greene was outdueled mostly because his pitch count climbed above 40 through his first two innings and he was never able to quite settle in. His fastball command was a bit erratic and it only forced four whiffs on 28 total swings. Instead, it was often far off the plate and able to be laid off of or caught too much of it and was fought off for a whopping 11 foul balls. He also took a line drive off his ankle in the fourth inning and stayed in the game after being looked at by trainers. This wasn’t a bad start by any means, but Greene has elevated his game so much this season that more strikeouts are expected. He’ll look to get back on track next time out against the Brewers.
