Kenley Jansen was down today after working the previous two days and four of the previous five. Detmers made it look easy in his place, earning his second career save eight days after his first one. We still say he belongs in the rotation, but that’s probably not happening at any point this year. He’s pitched 11 scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts in his last 11 appearances.

We’d still much rather see Detmers in the rotation, but at least he’s made a nice contribution recently; he’s allowed one run and struck out 15 in his last 11 innings of work. His season ERA remains inflated at 6.04 after he allowed 12 runs in a three-appearance span from Apr. 30-May 7.

At least as far as Statcast is concerned, this might have been the single unluckiest outing by a pitcher this season. The hits off Detmers left bats at 84, 46 (a bunt single), 68, 108 and 66 mph. Julio Rodríguez delivered the one shot in there with a .760 xBA. The other four came in at .240, .260, .180 and .040. This actually might be a good thing for Detmers; the better he fares as a reliever, the more likely it is that the Angels will lock him into that role for the long haul. This took his ERA from 2.57 to 5.79.

Angels manager Ron Washington made it official that Jack Kochanowicz has locked up the fifth spot in the rotation with Detmers moving to relief. It’s a substantial hit to his immediate fantasy appeal. The 25-year-old southpaw struck out 17 over 19 1/3 innings this spring in Cactus League action. His stuff should play up in shorter relief outings, but we’re not anticipating him generating enough volume to make an impact for fantasy purposes in shallow mixed leagues.
