2024 Player Outlook

When the Bears traded up and drafted Fields with the 11th overall pick in 2021, fantasy owners thought they were getting then next big running quarterback cheat code. All he needed to do was out-play Mitchell Trubisky which was not a daunting task. He endured the usual rookie struggles, but started to emerge as the weapon everyone thought they were getting when he threw for over 2,200 yards and rushed for over 1,100. However, the year-to-year growth everyone hoped to see wasn't there last season and Fields appeared in just 13 games, finishing with just over 2,500 passing yards with 16 passing touchdowns, 657 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. When the Bears realized Carolina's first-round pick they acquired would net them the No. 1 overall pick, they began to make arrangements to move forward without Fields. Shortly before the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bears traded Fields to the Steelers for a 2025 sixth-round pick that could end up as high as a fourth-rounder, but still, the return should tell you all you need to know about how teams view him. The expectation is that Russell Wilson will be the starter come Week 1 and with reports that Fields seemed disinterested in camp and wasn't putting forth a strong effort, his outlook for the 2024 season is not good. You can watch how things develop over the course of training camp, but Fields is not someone to target on Draft Day unless something very significant changes.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reports the Jets offense under OC Tanner Engstrand will have a “Lions flavor to it.”

Tanner, entering his first year as an NFL play caller, worked under Ben Johnson in Detroit before landing the Jets job this offseason. Tanner and pass game coordinator Scott Turner said the Jets would use elements of the hyper-efficient Lions offense in 2025 and beyond with Justin Fields under center. “It’s going to be a physical system,” Turner said. “We’re going to run the football, we’re going to be aggressive up front and try to chase explosive plays [in the passing game]. ... That’s what we’re going to be hunting.” Tanner’s main challenge will come in the form of transitioning from Jared Goff, a pocket passer, to Fields, a dynamic mobile quarterback. “In theory,” Cimini said, “run-pass options should become a staple in the offense.” The Lions under Johnson (and Tanner) led the NFL in middle-of-the-field pass attempts and profiled as a run-first offense. Detroit was 6 percent below their expected pass rate since the start of the 2023 season. If all goes well, the Jets will be among the two or three run-heaviest offenses in the NFL this season.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini believes there’s a chance the Jets could utilize the tush push this upcoming season.

This is nothing but speculation from Cimini following last week’s vote that kept the Eagles’ signature play alive for at least one more season. As Cimini notes in his article, the Jets were one of the teams that did not vote for the play to be banned. Their decision to vote in favor of the play could be viewed as the team tipping their hand on how they plan to deploy Justin Fields in short-yardage situations next season. Cimini also notes that on 12 tush push attempts for his career, Fields has converted 11 of those plays for first downs. His 12 attempts at the play rank second only to Jalen Hurts (100) and Josh Allen (55). It’s a small nugget, but one that could carry serious fantasy implications as fantasy managers look to exploit any potential edge during draft season. While the play could spell significant touchdown upside for Fields’ 2025 outlook, it could also come at the expense of Breece Hall’s touchdown totals. We’ll likely get a better sense of the team’s decision to use the play as training camp nears, but this is something worth tucking in the back of your mind as draft season draws closer.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey said that Justin Fields is the team’s starter and that Tyrod Taylor will be “right on his heels.”

Credit to Mougey for keeping things fun. Taylor is highly unlikely to challenge Fields for the starting role but it is nice to know that the Jets plan to see what Fields can do. The latter player received a two-year, $40 million contract that indicated he would be given the starting role, but it also falls short of being an outright, serious commitment. Things can always change, but drafting a rookie quarterback does not appear imminent for the Jets.

Jets agreed to terms with Justin Fields, formerly of the Steelers, on a two-year, $40 million contract.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal includes $30 million guaranteed. It’s likely a prove-it deal with an out for the Jets after the first year. Still, it’s good money for a quarterback who only lasted three years on his first team and was benched by his second. Fields cleaned up his mistakes last year, throwing five touchdowns to one intercpetion in his six starts to open the year. However, the Steelers’ offense had to limit its ceiling to cater to Fields’ strengths. Head coach Mike Tomlin ultimately grew tired of that approach and installed Russell Wilson as the starter for the remainder of the season. Fields now joins a Jets roster that has no other starting options at quarterback, meaning he could get a full season as the starter. Even with his limitations as a passer, that will put him on the QB1/2 border heading into 2025.
