2024 Player Outlook
James Cook finished 2023 with 1,567 yards from scrimmage which was the third most of any running. However, he was only the RB19 in points per game in PPR. And the main reason for that was Josh Allen. Not only did Allen take 15 rushing touchdowns for himself (Cook scored 2) but mobile quarterbacks don't typically dumb the ball off as often as their non-mobile counterparts. Cook is a talented player who offers a rock solid floor for fantasy but he could face some of the same problems in 2024. Hopefully he finds a paydirt a little more often this season.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports James Cook is attending Bills minicamp.
Cook, who was a no-show at the team’s OTAs in late May, checked in at the first day of minicamp amid his push for a new contract with Buffalo. NFL Network has reported that Cook, 25, entering the final year of his rookie deal, wants $15 million a year but is likely to play in 2025 even without an extension. Bill general manager Brandon Beans told reporters in April that no teams had inquired about Cook’s availability this offseason following a 2024 season that saw him total nearly 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns. Cook appears on track to serve as Buffalo’s No. 1 back in 2025, and should be considered a top-15 fantasy option in PPR formats.
James Cook did not attend Bills voluntary OTAs.
It’s hardly a surprise as Cook angles for a new contract entering the final year of his rookie contract with Buffalo. Bills officials, including general manager Brandon Beane, have dismissed Cook’s unhappiness with his current contract as a distraction. The team seems intent on hanging on to Cook for 2025 following his stellar 2024 campaign, which included nearly 1,300 total yards and 18 touchdowns as the Bills’ No. 1 back. It wouldn’t be a shock if Cook were to hold out during training camp if a deal has not been done. He said in March that he wants $15 million per year. Cook is set to make $5.7 million in 2024.
Speaking at a Celebrity Poker Tournament, James Cook declined to say whether he will hold out for a new contract.
“I necessarily don’t want to talk about it right now, because it’s like, it’s something I want to hold in to myself ... just let the business take care of the business,” Cook told venerable sports reporting source PokerNews.com. Over the past six weeks, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Cook would play for the Bills this season, regardless of whether GM Brandon Beane meets his $15 million annual asking price, and Beane notably told reporters that he received no trade inquiries regarding Cook during the 2025 NFL Draft. This is, unfortunately, a situation for fantasy managers to keep an eye on when the Bills’ organized team activities begin on May 27th.
Bills GM Brandon Beane told reporters that the Bills did not receive any calls about James Cook’s availability via trade this weekend.
Cook skipped last week’s voluntary workouts and is, by all accounts, still hoping that the Bills will extend his contract beyond 2025 to the tune of $15 million per year. The team hasn’t blinked and no suitors came calling this weekend. It is possible that Cook could attempt a “hold in” but he has very little leverage. Hopefully, the situation is resolved well before training camp begins.
