Guardians activated OF Lane Thomas from the 10-day injured list.
Will Wilson was demoted. The Guardians are bringing Thomas back from his quick two-week absence due to plantar fasciitis without first sending him on a rehab assignment. His last stay on the roster saw him go 0-for-14 over four games. Before that, he spent a month on the IL with a wrist injury. He’s hit just .186/.242/.325 in 70 games overall since the Guardians acquired him the Nationals last summer, and while the team might give him another chance to play regularly in center field, he’s probably only going to prove useful against lefties.
Guardians optioned INF Will Wilson to Triple-A Columbus.
Wilson had started five of the Guardians’ last six games, so this is something of a surprise. Still, he was hitting just .176/.263/.235 over 59 plate appearances. Wilson’s departure, combined with Lane Thomas’s return, suggests that Angel MartÃnez, who has mostly played center of late, will start seeing more middle infield time.
Mets selected the contract of RHP Justin Garza from Triple-A Syracuse.
He’ll join the bullpen. Garza was just picked up from the Giants after posting a 6.11 ERA in 17 2/3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento this season. The 31-year-old has a 5.74 ERA major league ERA from his 21 appearances with the Guardians in 2021 and 17 appearances with the Red Sox in 2023.
Mets optioned LHP Brandon Waddell to Triple-A Syracuse.
Waddell has made four relief appearances during three stints with the Mets and has a 3.38 ERA and a 7/2 K/BB in 10 2/3 innings this season.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports the Falcons expect Kirk Cousins to report to mandatory minicamp.
The 13-year veteran quarterback did not attend the Falcons voluntary OTAs in May, but did work out with the team in April. The team has repeatedly committed to Michael Penix as the Week 1 starter, even suggesting they could keep Cousins — scheduled to make $40 million in 2025 — as Penix’s backup. Cousins, who will be 37 at the start of the 2025 season, threw for 3508-18-16 in 14 games last season and had an abysmal five-game stretch in which he threw just one touchdown to nine interceptions, which ultimately led to his benching. The Falcons remain open to trading Cousins for the right price but that has not been met by any teams who have shown interest.
Mariners sent RHP Casey Lawrence outright to Triple-A Tacoma.
Lawrence can become a free agent or return to Tacoma. He was DFA’d on Saturday without ever pitching during his latest stint with the Mariners.
